Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). From the WHO's accounts, 470 million people are infected worldwide.
HSV-2 primarily affects the genital area but can also occur on the buttocks, anus, and thighs.
The symptoms of genital herpes can vary from person to person. Some individuals may not experience any symptoms at all, while others may develop painful sores or blisters in the genital area. These sores can be accompanied by itching, burning, or tingling sensations. Additional symptoms may include flu-like symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
Genital herpes is primarily spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can be transmitted even if there are no visible sores or symptoms present, as the virus can still be shed from the skin and transmitted to a sexual partner.
There is currently no cure for genital herpes, but the symptoms can be treated with antiviral medications. These medications can help reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of outbreaks, as well as decrease the risk of transmitting the virus to sexual partners.
Persons with sores suggestive of genital herpes should seek medical advice and discuss treatment options with a competent healthcare provider so that accurate diagnosis, guidance on managing symptoms, and accurate information about preventing transmission to others can be obtained.
